I think you have the correct TV but that the contrast ratio in the Argos Cat is incorrect.

The Panasonic TH-37PX70PED is a much higher spec set than the one in the Argos Catalogue. You may also have noted that the Argos Cat says only one HDMI whereas the TH-37PX70PED has two.

Basically the Argos Catalogue is confused and has a !!!! up on some of the descriptions. Argos are not a very clued up retailer of HiTech goods I'm afraid.

If I were you I'd get my money back from Argos. Go to John Lewis online and order the PX7 whixh is the same TV you have received from Argos but is only £699 or go for the higher spec 70X at £799 (still £100 less than you will pay for the lower spec Argos model!). Both come with a free 5 year guarantee (I'm not sure if that's what Argos offer, but John Lewis are famous for their excellent guarantees and service if anything goes wrong) and free delivery - so it doesn't matter where you live they'll deliver free.

If you can get to a John Lewis shop you may do even better as they will price match any other retailer in the country (the other retailer must have in stock on dispaly and price dispalyed and be a shop and not be a web only retailer though - Empire Direct and similar are often used as matches as they also have shops). If you can track down a better deal within 28 days of purchase you can request a price match. John Lewis have an excellent reputation in that respect. In fact on the AV Forums there is a whole thread dedicated to people tracking down better deals in order to get John Lewis to price match on TV's. If you post make and model number you will get loads of help.

So, if I was you, I'd get shot of the Argos TV ASAP and either take the easy and better route of John Lewis online or otherwise get to a John Lewis shop and get price matching.

As a general rule there is an art to getting a good TV at a rock bottom price. It is usually by doing plenty of research to decide what set you want and then trawling the net and finding the best price. Then try and get a price match from John Lewis to enjoy their service and the great guarantee they offer on all TV sets.

    Good luck.

I noticed this in the Argos catalogue too. I have the 50px70CAB and my parents have the 42px70CAB (saw my one and liked it so much they bought one too!) We bought them from a local independant shop but was checking the prices on Argos (as you do :) ).

When I mentioned the difference in model numbers, the shop where we bought ours from said Panasonic had just bought out this model (px7b) for people who wanted a more basic model. It came with the pedestal included (if you look closely you can see it's different from the one you can buy to go with the px70 models). He said it was the equivelant of last years best selling model. The px70 models have a shiny surround too. The px7b is more matt. And as someone has already said, the colour ratio is different. You can't buy a matching stand for the px7b either (I like my matching stand. I know the TV's not going to fall off it - and it's very easy to move. Much easier than my old 28'' CRT).

It is quite confusing. Bad Argos!

  • Just a wee update on my telly situation. I'm still sitting here with the wrong TV, on loan, till they find the correct model. It's obvious their catalogue was wrong in the first place but if they send me a better telly, or give me a fat discount on this, now second-hand one. I'll be quite happy. This is a good TV but not worth all that money.
I have all their emails assuring me it's fine to continue using this till they find "the correct" replacement so I've no worries.
Just a word of warning to anyone buying a TV from Argos though. Check the model number against the catalogue as soon as you've removed it from the box.
