Argos sent me inferior Plasma TV

I bought a panasonic 37" plasma TV from Argos on 28th August. It arrived yesterday after 5 weeks so I set it up immediately and a few minutes later I noticed the little stand was a different shape to the one in the catalogue. I checked the back of the TV for the model number and discovered it was not the model I ordered and is not even in their catalogue.

I phoned customer services and explained that it was the wrong model, and that it's a cheaper, inferior version. The lady said she'd send folk to pick it up and that I had to go back to the shop to get my refund. After waiting 5 weeks I told her that was all a bit inconvenient and not my mistake. She then said I could use the TV till they find a replacement, and that the replacement might end up being the same model I have already, i.e. the wrong one.

I emailed Argos later to confirm if it was okay for me to use this TV in the meantime and to make sure they ARE ordering me the one I wanted but can anyone advise me what to do if they send me the same inferior model and expect it to cost what I paid. I asked if they'd give me a discount or send me one with similar specs. for the same price but I'm unsure what to do if they refuse.

The TV I ordered was £799 and has a contrast ratio of 10000:1. The TV I got is £100 cheaper in John Lewis and the contrast ratio is 8000:1. Apparently the higher the ratio the better the viewing for gamers etc, so my boys tell me.

I promised my old TV to my neighbour so I'm not enjoying my purchase so far and I'm kind of scared to use the telly in case I'm stuck with it. Any advice welcome.

If they send you the same model again then return it for a refund and buy a tv elsewhere.
Gone ... or have I?
• I'd thought of that but the convenient thing about Argos is I used my card and it was on 9 months interest free.

What model did you receive and which one were you supposed to get? Was it the PX70 advertised and received the PX7?

You are entitled to a full refund as they sold you something that you didn't order.
Ask them to take it away as soon as possible (within 48 hours) and start again

I wouldnt recommend you use the television incase it develops other faults through use and also in effect it becomes second-hand goods through use. Better to return it in the original condition or better still if you can, return back to the store to get your refund.

Why did you not buy fron John lewis all there tvs come with 5 year warranty, argos is the last place i would buy a tv from, plenty of cheaper online stores some that offer buy now pay later also.
• Thanks for all your replies. The lady on the phone said she'd send someone asap to fetch the TV and I was to go back to the shop for the refund. I said that was inconvenient, mainly 'cos I was annoyed at waiting the 5 weeks in the first place, then getting it all set up. It was then she said I could use it (carefully) for as long as it took to get the replacement.
I suppose I'm hoping they'll either send me a better model, or give me a nice fat discount for their mistake.
The reason I bought from Argos is it's just down the road and I have a card, and I sat with the catalogue for days picking the right one. The nearest John lewis to me is about 50 miles, I think.
The TV I ordered is on page 860 of the current catalogue. It's £899 in the book but when I got to the shop it was reduced by £100. Great, I thought.
The model number in the cat is TV 37PX7PED but the one I got is TH-37PX7B, which is an even cheaper model, £699 in John Lewis.
The funny thing is, the lady on the phone wouldn't believe me for ages that I'd got the wrong TV. I'm still waiting for a reply to my email, just to confirm another one WAS ordered, and that it's okay to continue using this one in the mean time. My old TV is off to another home.
• I've just typed 37PX7PED into google and got a tesco page with a picture of the TH-37PX7B. Unless they've changed the base and now they both look the same.
This is definitely the wrong telly though, and "it's the contrast ratio that counts" as my son keeps saying.

It's the PX7 bit thats the key to the model, not the B or PED, PED means it comes with the Pedetsal stand, if you got a cabinet stand it would be CAB - B is just the normal panel model number, i.e every TV would be TH37PX7B then plus PED or CAB etc (TH37PX7PED or TH37PX7CAB). They leave the B off the models with optional stands etc.

• Thanks. I see. I get what you're saying, but that doesn't mean they've sent me the right TV does it?
I mean, why does the contrast ratio differ between the one they sent me and the one I was supposed to get. The 37px7ped isn't on the panasonic web-site but there's a 37px70ped and the amount of awards and recommendations etc. is impressive. I thought the difference between those two (the px7 and the px70) was just the amount of HDMi ports. The px7b, (that I got delivered) is on the panasonic site and it's not that impressive. If they end up saying it's just the base that's different I'll definitely want a full refund and I'll see if Curry's or someone else does the interest free.
