Gym membership

Hi there,
Looking for some advice as to where I stand with my old gym. Recently I discovered they had been charging me for a gym membership despite me cancelling my membership back in November 2016. I originally thought they had just not cancelled down my membership properly however When I spoke to the gym they said it was due to another gym membership being linked to my account, without my knowledge. The gym agree they owe me a refund amounting to just short of £700 however they have set up a direct debit without my permission and as far as I'm aware they should send confirmation of any direct debit via letter which they obviously failed to do. Wondered if anyone could advise if I can take this further? My bank advised I could claim compensation but I don't know where to start. I have already complained to the management at the gym and am currently writing a letter to their head office. Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
