Co-op charges taken out the same day

On 1/10 I got a £19.50 charge for an unpaid DD.
The thing is that the charge was taken out on the same day the DD was returned unpaid. I was allways under the impression that they had to give you notice of any charges before they took them from your account. I havent recieved any letter saying they were charging me (although it is only 1 day after so might recieve it tomorrow)
Would just like to know if they can do this before I go into the bank to complain about it.
Thanks for any help

Yes they can.
Unpaid item charges will debit the same day. Overlimit charges (not applicable in your case) debit the 21st of each month (or the next working day after that).
Hope that helps.0 -
Ok thanks for the info. Still gonna go in to the bank and kick up a fuss and see if they will waiver it as it is my first charge.0
