I can't forgive myself for not being there when tiggy took her last breath. I got up around 7am to check on her and she was very quiet but showing no signs of hunger or thirst, despite water and food nearby.I stroked her head then I went back to bed because I wasn't at work yesterday. I got up around 12 went straight into the dining room and there she was sprawled out not breathing with her eyes and mouth open. She want in that position when I left her. My guilt will stay until the day (if I'm very lucky) I get to be with her again. What if she cried out for me and looked around to see if I was there?. I shouldn't have gone back to bed and abandoned her. We have put her body in the garage in s box for now and will bury her tomorrow Saturday.0

Bath cube - I'm so sorry you are going through this. It sounds as if Tiggy may have had a heart attack, which would explain her position. If so, it would have been very quick.
A friend sadly saw her cat die of a heart attack - one second she was watching her cat grooming herself, the next second puss just gave a little squeak and flopped sideways. It was that quick.
Do you think you would you find it helpful to talk to someone from The Cats' Protection charity bereavement service?0 -
I'm so sorry for your loss, especially as she'd been a part of your life for such a long time. I feel your pain as two of my cats were 21 & 23 when they passed and were actually older than my son.
But please do not feel guilty about not being with her. Cats know when they are ready to pass and will go off to be on their own. She chose to go to her bed which was familiar and comfortable so she drifted off feeling quite content.
It is natural that you will go through the grieving process just the same as if you'd lost a family member. Please contact your vet as many practices will offer pet berievement counselling.
Take care xx0 -

Yep, it's very sad. One of my two gingers boys has been missing here on Gozo for three days now. Just over a year old and his brother is pining for him and my heart is very heavy.0

I'm dreading the first Christmas without her. A little black cat who tiggy was jealous of now comes in our house now and again. I don't feed maisie because she has a renal tag on her collar. Her owner said it's fine if she comes in my house but another neighbour had been feeding her cat biscuits and treats and she had to have a build up of fluid on her stomach drained at the vets.0

Have you thought about getting another cat?
Some people do it almost immediately, others wait for weeks or months.
Only you will know if/when you are ready.
FWIW, I still miss my old boy and it's been 5 years since he died.
Strangely, a few weeks after he died, a little black cat started visiting us. She had a collar on and came in for cuddles and sometimes a sleep under the radiator if it was cold and wet.0
