Is it possible for him to come back for say 6 months and rent/share somewhere whilst you stay abroad with the dogs, whilst he looks around for something suitable to either rent or buy rather than you having to sort things from abroad?

Maybe - or we could kennel them and rent something smaller/cheaper I guess, hate the idea of being apart from them.
  • I'm probably being a bit dense here, but what about the address you're on the electoral roll for? Could you live there?

The electoral address is based on the last address I was registered at, and they know I live abroad.

Why don't you contact the financial advisor at your bank? They would be able to tell you whether you would qualify for a mortgage from them.
I have both my mortgages through my bank (one residential and one BTL) and the financial advice I got from them was excellent - and free!!

My very first mortgage was a guarantor supported mortgage (in 1979) but I think they were withdrawn many years ago.

Is it an inter-company transfer or a different employer?

If it's an inter-company transfer, were you expats (i.e. paid by the U.K. office) or local employees?

No it's a local job, and in the UK will be too.

Quick update - We arrived back in the UK permanently at the end of Jan 2018 - hubby started working full time, I got a part time job, went to our own bank (TSB) and Halifax and they wouldn't give us much of a mortgage, so we went with a local independent broker who managed to get us what we needed with the Principality BS, and we completed on the purchase of our home in the beginning June.

Not bad for 11 years out of the UK :)
Unfortunately, we had to leave our dogs in kennels for 11 months, but were reunited a month ago!

Even brokers learn something on this site. I would have had a few ideas on where to go, but I would never have thought of Principality. Chances are they will have been cheaper than the places I would have looked.

The broker has been excellent throughout, and part of the deal we have with him is that he will contact us in the last 6 months of our 2 year fixed rate to start searching for a new deal for us. (I don't know if this is the norm as this is the first time we have used a broker)

We got a bit of a !!!!!! letter from Halifax saying they couldn't loan us after all about 2 weeks after the appointment where they said they could loan us a small amount in principle. The problem was down to our lack of address from what I can gather.

The broker put our minds at rest right from the start, just said to get our rental address on every bit of documentation we could, driving licences, electoral roll, bank accounts, our jobs etc. Even he was surprised at how easily it went through. We got a good deal from the Principality and they would have loaned us more than we asked for as well.

That's a bit worrying for your clients, do you not have access to the whole market and investigate all available options?
