Handy, but generally not mandatory. It depends on the layout as far as we're concerned, although some councils may insist on it I suppose.
We look to protect the main escape route, which is generally the hall, stairs and landing. We sometimes specify escape windows if you have an "inner room" situation.
A typical situation where you might require an escape window might be where you have a bathroom behind a kitchen. The bathroom is the "inner room", the kitchen is the "access room". Obviously the danger is that somebody might put a chip pan on, then get in the bath for half an hour. If the kitchen then goes up in flames there is no escape from the bathroom, hence the need for an escape window. This would apply just as much to a ground floor layout as to a first floor.0 -

Never heard of that one. Our front door can be locked and then the key removed and it's not that old a door, Hmmmm.
