I visited Rayleigh in Essex today as I have done many times and used B T WiFi Hotspots.
Why do they keep dropping out and sometimes unable to connect?

Sounds like service as normal. If they work at all they are always incredibly slow.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

So many of these hotspots are just BT users home hubs .HH6 may have decent WiFi but its not something that reaches a decent distance outside the home .

Most are created by home routers with legislated low power output and which have been positioned for best performance in the home or more likely to meet the aesthetic demands of the lady of the house rather that carefully positioned for maximum area coverage by a professional installer.

Fon hot spots are very much a stop gap solution. Don't expect to wander around and get good performance. You'll need to find one offering a good signal then loiter suspiciously while you use it.
