Encaustic tiles - patchwork design

Hello all,

I'm currently at the stage of designing my new kitchen, and I am considering tiling the splashback areas between the base and wall units, and around the sink.
Now I know they won't be to everyone's taste, but I really like the encaustic tiles in a random patchwork design. However I don't know anyone who has them so I'm hoping someone on here who has them can provide some feedback? Easy to clean? Have they lasted? Anything you wished you'd known before installing them?
Hopefully I can post a link to what I mean for those who aren't sure.....

Main thing I would say is that before they are treated with something like Lithofin MN StainStop they do stain very easily and it can be pretty much impossible to remove. So lots of care needs to be taken to protect them from anything that might stain them - adhesive, grout, dirt, etc.

Ideally get someone experienced with working with them to do the installation.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Have to agree with benjus and say make sure you get someone who knows exactly what they are doing. I have fired earth encaustic tiles on my kitchen floor. The problems I've had with grout haze were horrific. The fitter, recommended by several friends, sealed the tiles with stain stop but also sealed the haze. It was a pain in the bum. They needed cleaned with an abrasive pad and resealed. Tiles cost an absolute fortune. Look great but never again.

If your tiles are installed by an experienced tiler and the correct installation and maintenance guidelines are followed, you should be fine. Here are some useful links:

To find an experienced tiler in your area, Google-search for the Tile Association

For guidelines for installing encaustic tiles: go the Alhambra Tiles website and search for the page 'Sealing and Laying Encaustic Tiles'

Finally, for anyone out there needing to clean or reseal their encaustic tiles, you can find a full range of safe and effective cleaning products, plus good sealants and other maintenance products on the Alhambra Tiles website under 'Sealant, Cleaner & Wax'

    Good luck!
