Hire car insurance

Hi all

I left UK 2 years ago and am heading back to see the family shortly. I have hired a car for my time over in UK and noted from the advice on this website not to take the hire companies insurance option as this is vastly overinflated

I understand there is some cover as standard for hire cars, so what else do I need? I did some reading and saw there was 'Excess Insurance' - is this all I need to cover me for all eventualities?

Will there be any issues with me buying through comparison sites, given I am UK citizen (but not currently UK resident) but will be hiring the car in UK?
