sd card via reader not appearing as drive

Normally when I plug in my card reader (with memory cards of various sorts from cameras etc) into a usb port they automatically used to appear as a disk drive for access. ...and all is well.
(Apologies in advance for a bit of a ramble but hopefully it will explain better than just partial information!)

Today I have done the same with a microsd card via my reader (that contains audio files from a tascam dr-05 recorder) and a drive letter was not automatically produced.

Can anyone help with this? details are as follows:-
win 10 64bit PC
Reader still works with camera sd card (Kindston card reader FCR-HS219/1 ) - appears as drive F:
microsd card, when using drive management did appear as drive 5 but with no letter allocated. I allocated drive J and selected a folder as an associated path (Why I wonder?).

It then appears as drive J but unfortunately that had been a mapped network drive and it also picked up that network drive name!! Also I cannot eject the reader "drive" on usb.

I have removed the associated path to no effect.

Tried to change drive letter to unallocated letter (R in this case) and got the following message:
"Some programs that rely on drive letters may not run correctly. Do you want to continue?" I continued.

result.
dr-05 now appears as drive R, fine. All files and folders seem OK (it's fat32 by the way). I can eject the card reader 'drive'

The original shared network drive (my older XP PC) still shows (correctly disconnected) but appear with the folders that were on the microsd card!

So after all this almost everything is working fine, but why, what did I do wrong and what should I be doing?

It sounds like all you did wrong was to use Windows! Sometimes these things happen.

I vaguely remember having problems (in Windows XP/7) with removable local devices being mounted with drive letters that should have been reserved for network shares.

At least you know how to use the Drive Management control panel applet to mount the drives manually if Windows gets confused.

Do you have a network drive that gets mounted only when accessed? I think that's what caused the problems in my case.

Drive X got mounted when I accessed a network drive. But before doing that, I plugged in a USB stick, which tried to mount to the same (apparently spare) drive letter. And then Windows got confused as to whether it was the USB stick or network share that should have that drive letter so just refused to mount the USB stick at all. :-/

What you've done (by manually assigning drive letters) should sort things out. :-)

Not quite the same for me but useful to know.

I manually selected the same drive letter (doh!) as a drive that does not connect at logon -as it is on an old pc that is hardly ever switched on.
.......but all is fine now, thanks.
