Help! - Washing Machine Drum Smoking When Switched On

Hello all,
We are in a bit of a dilemma. We have a Beko washing machine that had not been working. It would get stuck halfway through a cycle and did not appear to be draining. We manually drained it and cleared the little pump filter at the front but it still had the same issue. So we decided to detach it from its connections and take a look from the bottom to check the waste pipe (YouTube videos made it look easy and decided it was cheaper than calling out an engineer). We cleared out some gunk as best we could from the waste pipe using a pipe cleaning tool, though we didn't take it out entirely (just unplugged it from the outlet and the pump connection). We then put it all back together.
Having turned it on today to check if it works, we opened the door just to check inside before starting the cycle. It was smoking! I don't think it was steam because the drum had been dry and also because there is a bit of a burning smell. We turned it off immediately and switched off the power switch.
Does anyone know what may be causing it/what to do next? We had wanted to avoid calling out an engineer/buying a new one, and tried to fix it ourselves as it seemed straight forward... Is there any hope for the machine?

If you can smell burning and see smoke, I suspect that's it for the machine. Beko models are cheap and if it's an older machine, it's not worth spending money fixing one component to have another break soon.0
