Car hit my car, which then made my car hit another

Hi

Just looking for a bit of advice. We were parked in a car park and went into a shop. Our car was parked on a bit of a slope in a parking bay. When I was in a shop, there was an announcement and they read out my car number plate asking for the driver to immediately go outside. I went outside to find my car had basically been moved forward. I thought for a moment that we'd left the handbrake off. So I moved the car. The handbrake was on.

Anyway, one of the staff from the shop I was in told me that my car had rolled forward and ended up hitting another car. She said that the owner of the other car had taken a few pictures and they'd all had a look and couldn't see any damage, although he did have a crack to his number plate.

When we looked at the back of our car (our car was parked facing forwards), we noticed the back bumper had a mark on it, almost like an imprint of where we'd obviously been hit. I looked at the car that was parked behind us and they had exactly the same imprint. So, obviously what has happened is that car has reversed into the spot (it wasn't there when we got there), hit our car and it pushed our car forward into another.

I'm just wondering if the car that our car hit makes a claim, would we be responsible or would it be the car that hit ours?

Also wondering if they do make a claim, how much does that up your insurance premium? I have about 18 years no claims bonus, which is protected. We haven't had any accidents in that time.

Assuming the car behind you is liable then ultimately his/her insurers will pay for your damage and the car in front of you, and your ncd protection 'lives" should not be affected

Notify your insurer of the incident.

You can find out now roughly what this incident does to your premium by doing dummy quotes online with and without this loss your history
  • I'm hoping that nothing comes of it to be honest. I mean the damage to our car isn't really anything. Our car is black, but the bumpers aren't sprayed. They're just the standard black plastic or whatever it is. So there's just marks on it, which I think will probably buff out.

This really does my head in. Our last three cars have had more damage done to them sitting in supermarket car parks than in 200k miles of driving on the road!

We always park well away from others in a supermarket car park, usually all by ourselves then you come out and invariably find two or three vehicles parked round you when there are plenty spaces elsewhere, why do people do that?
