My partner and I were looking to buy a house and discovered that we both had very poor credit scores. You need to wait until a statement has been generated and then pay in full before the due date.

Good point. I have sometimes run up a large balance, then paid it off before the statement ; but that doesn't help anything. The key to credit scores is activity.
