mystery standing order

Options
Hi all,
I have a standing order of £10 a month, coming out of my bank account. I have is a reference number, i know the barclays bank sort code and account number its paid to.i have telephoned my bank they have said "all we have is the sort code and account number, the same as you, we can't help.
I phoned barclays and understandably they will not access the account or give me any info due to Data Protection. I suspect its paid to a debt collection agency for a scorecard from over 7 years ago where i agreed to pay off the debt at £10 pm.
I suspect i have paid it off by now but don't want to just cancel as i have finally gotten my credit file to be excellent and wouldn't want a default slapping on it. If i do owe anything still i can pay it off but i can't find out who to pay it to?
sorry it was a bit long winded, any advice will be appreciated.
thanks in advance.

You would know who the debt enforcement is with, somewhere along the line you would have some letter statement at least.
You would be somewhat aware of how much was owed at the time, so would have an idea if it is close to completion, usually you set an end date with standing orders eg 48 monthly payments of £10 starting on such n such a date, finally, there would be some sort of reference for the recipient and one on your own statement.
You need to re-check your own records.

It may be worth googling the numbers (nn-nn-nn or nn.nn.nn is commonly used) to find the 'owner' of the account?

If they publish it on the internet, of course ;) ?

    e.g. a search on 20-04-15 38290008 throws up Barclaycard

Not the same as a debt collector, but some of them definitely do publish their account numbers that way.

with a standing order it carries on paying out until you say stop. So it could well be you have paid it of and overpaying.

Can you not contact the DCA?

Can you remember how much it was for? 7 years @ £10 per month would be £840..was the interest frozen?

yes dutr, i should know who the debt enforcement is with but I'm afraid i was a bit of an ostrich back then and i cannot find one slip of paper with any reference to the debt. i set up the SO and in my ostrich wisdom back then i have reference it payee (myself). the only reference on the statement is the bank sort and account number, thats it. I was drowning in debt at the time, but i have risen from it paying everyone back, i just can't find out who this payee is?
