    Thanks for all the useful info. The label side looks untouched so luckily it must have landed butter-side-down and stayed that way.

    I wouldn't have thought of using Brasso, etc. Somewhere I've got 2000 grit emery paper and an unopened tube of Peek metal polish, which is supposed to be quite fine grade, so will give those a go first.

    What CD is it? Almost everything produced in significant numbers on CD is available cheaply second hand on eBay, Amazon and other sites.

    so that's plan B if I mess this disc up. Good to learn about EAC too. Since I no longer have a car with a good CD player (or indeed a car) it's time to grasp the nettle and start putting music on the phone . . :eek:

    I'd give EAC a go first, just in case you inadvertently damage the disc further...
