Wow, really like this :) Thanks. I am going to spend a little time now looking on this link and making a final choice to purchase

The second one not good enough. First one at least ticks some of the boxes.

You have told us your daughter is very careful, but you do realise this is 2.3Kg - without a charger? Up/down stairs, other kids throwing/kicking bags.....

Was thinking along the lines of a trial of a 2kg bag of sugar, some sweets and and egg... if the egg lasts a week... :)

OK, hard boil the egg then. :D

It has all the bells and whistles, bar discrete graphics, but it is £550. Not cheap. The other caveat for me is that it runs Windows 10 Home, as opposed to Pro.

This eBay link has some good pics http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-5578-3-5-i7-16GB-Touch-1920x1080-15-6-034-2in1-512GB-SSD-Win-10-/302094895916
Same machine but with double the RAM, double the storage and an i7 CPU.

Honestly? I can't say, as I've never spent that much on a laptop. Still using one that is eight years old. :o:)

    So what the consensus is.

This one is more like mine; http://mcscom.co.uk/product/dell-inspiron-17-5759-i7-6500u-2-50ghz-16gb-256gb-ssd-r5-m335-17-3-fhd-touch-win10-1yr-rtb-wty-mln520-free-wallet-case/

SO, last curveball my daughter has thrown at me is that she must be able to play her DVD collection on the new laptop! :rotfl:
Do all of these options have that capability or is it becoming a thing from the past?!?!
I do think 15" screen as opposed to the bigger (and bulkier?) 17" to be honest.
I am really grateful for the help, it is very kind
Will sleep on it tonight, see if there are any more final nudges in certain directions during the day tomorrow and then buy something tomorrow night.
    Cheers again!

you could get her an external, usb dvd drive?

More you plug in, shorter the battery will last. Integrated battery on the 5578, so if it goes flat, she can't snap another one in. You have to disassemble the 5578 to replace that battery.

Some people would, and do convert their DVD collection to Avi, mp4 etc. Scratch-proof and instantly accessible too. Possibly on a usb drive, or 128G stick for around £25 will hold around 64 fairly high quality films, or about 40 blueray, bymmv. The usb sticks consume less power than a DVD, or external hdd.

Once the dvd is no longer needed, a cd to hdd caddy can be installed (often by undoing 1 screw) to take a second 2.5" drive

A bit cheeky to suggest that the girl should forget her DVDs.

The 17.3" has a built in DVD drive, 16GB of RAM, SSD and discrete graphics, but you prefer a smaller screen.
Just wait until something comes up. Landscape changing every day.
  • I've had my xps touch screen for about 2.5 years, use it every day, and can say that I have very rarely used the touch functionality. I suppose it depends how she is going to use it, and as my laptop is not actually a 2 in 1 just has a touch screen the screen is pretty useless.

With regards to DVDs, unless she has an attachment to them, I'd say rip them all to your computer and get an external hard drive. Plus you can maybe get some money back on ebay or car boot for them. I don't bother with DVDs any more. With streaming and digital downloads, can't see it being too long until they are completely obsolete.

Well we are all entitled to our opinion, besides it is the content of the DVD's that matters, I am sure she would prefer to carry around one small and light hard disk than 50 DVD's.

As for the 17.3 inch, they call these desktop replacements for a reason, unless his daughter wants to develop muscles a 17" is overkill IMO. I guess you could recommend one of the two below, just a practical.

    They are not my requirements;

Ignore that and you ignoring her criteria.

Not at all, sometimes we need to educate people on their criteria.

As others have stated much more practical to have movies on a hard disk.

I have at least suggested something she asked for in her "criteria" from the outset; a touch screen and as the OP asked for advice and suggestions I gave it.

I did say IMO, in my opinion. Of course you are entitled to yours, but a 17" behemoth or a "15 with no touchscreen is just your usual post of bargains, which you seem to have an amazing skill of finding.

I would love the 17" you recommended because it would meet MY needs, but I will soldier on with my 10 year old laptop (probably till I snuff it), I have a backup with cloned hard disk. The only change I will make is an SSD, just waiting for the prices to come down in the autumn.

I have a plethora of nieces and nephews and they all seem to put true portability ahead of screen size, even the gamers would rather have a desktop for their games. At a recent family get together, only the ones with ultraportables such as the one I recommended above, brought them with them (along with their iPads)..

The most important advice I have given is to go see them, then they can really get a feel for the devices.

Where is the "15 with no touchscreen" that you claim that I have posted??

You seem to be getting a bit carried away.
What we would do and what suits their requirements are completely differing things.
Personally I wouldn't spend anything like that. We can customise a much cheaper machine to suit our needs, rip or download media to our heart's content.
But others need to have their SSD pre-installed, a DVD player onboard.....
