Lots and lots of svchost.exe . . . but don't know why?

Sorry for appearing stupid with this question, but I decided to have a clean-around and dusting of my computer and out of curiosity opened Task Manager to see what was happening.
Well, what was mostly happening, apart from expected processes and services, were / are svchost.exe processes.
ELEVEN of them:
svchost.exe SYSTEM: 4
svchost.exe LOCAL SERVICE: 5
svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE: 2
Though all are "Host Process for Windows Services", each is different to t'other in memory demand, ranging from 1,972k to 24,140k.
I'm just wondering . . . is that a fairly typical example of an ordinary everyday Windows 7 desktop computer in action?
I have several programs running in the background, Avast AV, Win Patrol, Malwarebytes, Kerish Doctor, Everything (search), so is it the case that each of these (and others) appears as a separate but unidentified running process?? And is it possible to specifically relate an svchost.exe to an actual service??
Thanks!

Seems to be a few down on my Win 10 machine which doesn't have much running other than the browser...

What a great link to a super website and very helpful article (and only recently written, too!) Many thanks, hans 2: I'm now much the wiser -- I've saved the article as a pdf for future reference.

Svchost is basically a container (host) for a program process to run inside. There's no technical difference between a programme you run like Word and a programme that needs to run in the background (eg system stuff which needs to run all the time), so it is launched inside a servicehost which helps provide longevity and marshall the programme which doesn't have a user interface.0
