Internet Gateway?

Hi,
We have 3 computers connected to the Internet via a BT Voyager Router. My husbands computer connects wirelessly to the router, but appeared to be loading a bit slower than mine, which connects directly to the router.
I had a look at the connections and my husband has an Internet Gateway icon in the Network Connections (as well as the local one), which seems to be busily exchanging sending and receiving packets.
I've tried to disable the Internet Gateway, but it still seems to be live, and only disapears when I take out the dongle!
Can anyone tell me what this internet Gateway is and do we need it, or has it appear from somewhere, possibly when we installed a new DVD writer along with Nero 7 etc.,
Any help will the gratefully received.
Thanks
