I don't believe that to be the case at all

If it's true that all active funds underperform trackers then a closet tracker can hardly be a "terrible active fund".

I hope we can all agree that some active funds will outperform trackers and some won't. There's going to be a distribution.

But it isn't true; about half of the active funds outperform trackers - but knowing which ones in advance is the difficulty.

And the ones that do are relatively easy to spot to anyone with internet access and a basic ability to interpret a graph. God bless the internet.

And I thought they were very difficult to spot as past good performance is no guarantee of future good performance.

It’s a snapshot in time. Bit like reading CVs who are you going to employ? Give him a year and see how he gets on.

A very good point, no one knows the future apart from the OP. However past abysmal performance would indicate to me things aren’t going to get better.

Yes, I'm Marty McFly.....unfortunately I don't know the future which is why I play the probabilities and index. The tone of this thread is encouraging to me as there seem to be a lot of confident active investors that are not about to but indexes and I need them to give indexing the best chance of success.

Dear Mr McFly I’m reasonably sure you articulated that trackers would beat active funds (not investors) in your first post, and indeed were relishing this fact and still do.

The lack of support from active investors in this thread I find disappointing. However you think it to be to the contrary, to this I find heart.
