EU's Hogan warns of hard Irish border if UK leaves customs union

If the border stays open, it's going to become an easy unofficial entry point into the UK. The people who voted leave aren't going to be happy about that.
And if it closes, it will be a smugglers' paradise just like it used to be. There are hundreds of roads between the north and south.0 -

When I lived in Italy they had a hard time accepting that we didn't have them, and that is a general attitude in Europe. They feel we're making things difficult for ourselves. In a way introducing them may be an inevitable corollary of Brexit and reducing immigration.
But don't blame me, guv...
Not really, just passports.
I was thinking that where someone has a need to travel regularly across the border (say they live one side and work the other) it might be possible to have a preauthorised electronic pass allowing an individual to drive/walk across the border subject to random checks. Or maybe we could insert a sub-cutaneous sensor in our arms?Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

Not sure that will work. I forsee a fence with border guards, probably paid for by UKFew people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
It's all scare mongering in the main .... all these "issues" people randomly throw out there.
These are just a big list of things to consider/look at. Yes there'll be changes... but people will live.0 -
We're happy to have free trade with the EU.
Free trade means no hard border.
It's down to the EU to make it happen. If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -
Well of course no-one else in the EU wants Britiain to have a Hard border. We know what they all want. They want us to continue paying the same amount we are now, continuing to be a part of the single market, continuining to have free movement of people but to have no say in the future of Europe. Essentially the EU want a 'on paper only' Brexit.
But because they are tying the single market to the free movement of people, they are not going to get that.
So it looks like we end up with complete/full/hard Brexit.
I don't see any other outcome unless someone changes their position (and the British people won't allow any party to agree to the 'paper only' Brexit)Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

This is far from scaremongering. It's a reality for people who live in NI, and it's very dangerous indeed.
As for "people will live", well. How smug. How thoughtless. You're all right, Jack, aren't you - but plenty of others aren't.
Please think before posting such trite nonsense in future.supermario1965 wrote: »The EU should stop messing up with our business. Ireland is our business.
