BT Shop Routers

Selling d-link dwr-921 4g lte router for £114.99. Beware according to BT, these are hardware version B routers. They are the old type and not compatible with IPv6 protocols that most service providers are switching to. Already out of date. You need to buy the latest hardware version C. You've been warned.

    Yes not a grab it bargain in my view, unless of course you don't mind buying a 4g lte router that will be outdated as new protocol is adopted. This is provably true for other routers. For example, EE have already adopted ipv6 protocol in some areas so this router will not work. Sorry if this is wrong forum but didn't see any other appropriate forum to post in order to warn the public.

    IPv6 has been coming for years as they keep saying IPv4 IPs are rare and running out, which as i sell IPs this is just a rumour plenty of IPv4s are available.

    even cPanel at the moment wont let you whitelist or block an IPv6 IP

    IPv6 will become a reality when the Internet of Things properly gains traction. (i.e. when just about everything is Internet-enabled). Until then it's a case of Sooooooooooon. :)

    Once people like cPanel start activating it in WHM so they can be blocked or whitelisted then IPv6 will become the norm.

    IPv6 IPs come free with VPS and dedicated servers while IPv4 IP will cost upto $5 each for any additional ones over the 1 or 2 you get with servers.

    I have a client who is with sky and they use IPv6 on their router, so when she locks herself out of her account (bruteforce) she has to call sky to get the IPv4 so she can be whitelisted on the server.
    all cpanel say is IPv6 will be added to a future release

    The response I got from BT after no end of phone calls;
    "Thank you for your time on the telephone yesterday.
    I have raised your query with our product team as discussed.
    Today I had a response to suggest we only have the Hardware revision B on our current stock.
    Best wishes,
    Louise"

    EE are already using IPv6 protocols in some areas and this router will not work. It seems to affect those on new contracts so I suppose the sim is some way set up for it. Someone on another forum suggested that it was possible to ask EE for a sim compatible with IPv4 if you had the older hardware version B of this router. But all beyond my knowledge base.

    If you're spending a hundred or more on a router you'd hope to be using it for a few years, so it's something that is worth paying attention to as future proofing.

    I'm slightly surprised that any router at that price point doesn't support it by now as it's been on some models for at least 3-5 years (my current router cost £150 about 4 years ago and has it for example).
