Without getting too political about it, the world is a very different place now. Effectively in-work benefits are subsidies for employers who don't want to pay enough for their employees to cope with the current costs of housing etc.

There's nothing new about employers not wanting to pay a fair days wage. :(

My grandfather was involved in civil action in the coal mines back in the 20s when the mine owners kept reducing wages in order to maintain their own lifestyles.

I'm similar to you, in that I am already stressing about things. My kids are 8 and 6 and I constantly worry how I will cope. My main issue is my job at the moment though. I have worked here for 13 years, but I work for a sole proprietor in London and he is getting on a bit, so I panic about redundancy.

But I will have to cope with it when it happens. It is what it is.

I overpay as much as I can in the hope that my mortgage will be more affordable by the time my kids hit 18. I want to be able to provide free accommodation for them if they do decide to go on university. I don't want them worrying about money in the same way that I am.
