How about making an online application for her, in her presence? At the end it may request documentation, or it may instantly verify her existence electronically and avoid the need for a branch visit.

Tesco didn't want documentation for an online application (just a signature form completed ).

If you have a store offering banking nearby there is the advantage of over counter banking for extended hours (until 8pm when CS closes).

Back to the original post, your mum has a council tax bill and receives state pension.

If she has recent letters from both of these it should be sufficient for ID and address confirmation. Some banks accept blue disabled badges.

If you mum already has a credit history it may well verify her electronically, however she would still need to take ID if visiting a branch to show proof that she is the person applying.

Applying online may be a viable option as it could take away the hassle, however if ID is needed you just go to the branch with the ID to finish off.

Have you not got POA for your mum? Only suggesting this as should it ever come to a situation where she is not able to do any banking e.g. access it will make your life and hers a lot easier.

I hate to say this but the chances are the other bank in the town may well close one day. Most banks will offer telephone banking and some let you deposit at Post offices.

Hope this helps and she gets sorted.

If she is on the electoral roll and has lived there a long time I am surprised that an electronic ID check isn't sufficient, which is clearly what happened to luvchocolate.

Good point. Perhaps OP could try assisting their mother to open an account online?
    : )
  • I know you say "online banking" is not an option but could you just open it online then manage it in branch? Some branches will actually help you through the process which kind of defeats the objects but may be an option.

    That's horribly ageist.

You are right. Sorry. I bet she has the mobility of a 18year old and can fight off muggers.

Isn't this all a moot point - apply online for a current account (that can be operated via the branch) and see if it asks for further ID.
