Van insurance for house clearance jobs

Wondered if there is anyone who works in the house clearance business.

Trying to get van insurance is proving very difficult to do, the premiums are sky high. It seems that the drop down list of occupations on the insurers websites does not cover this type of work.

The nearest seems to be 'Furniture Remover' which is not really the correct occupation.

2 companies have said they cannot quote as the job does not fit into any of their categories.

Its basically clearing houses and buying furniture to sell in a shop and online.

The latest company he tried says that it has to be classed as 'haulage' which bangs the premium up even further as furniture removal can be country wide. In actual fact the pick ups and delivery will probably be within a 10 mile radius.

Would appreciate any advice if there is anyone on here working at the same job who has managed to sort appropriate insurance.

It sounds to me like you are a "Second Hand Furniture Dealer".

You would not normally need "Haulage" cover as the items belong to you (Unless you also deliver items for other people as well).

I would recommend you try a local broker (Avoid Swinton) or a broker who specialises in the removal trade or antique trade as they are both similar trades to your trade.

Nb some Insurers may not agree that you are a second hand furniture dealer so it would be best to go over this with them

Thanks for the reply. Regarding the 'furniture removal' he told them that he buys the furniture so in effect once its bought it belongs to him but they said that furniture removal was only for your own furniture???

But they said that as he would deliver something such as a 3 piece suite when someone buys it its considered 'Haulage'.

Think a broker is going to be the easiest then, thank you.
