Financial Aid to study in Scotland

Options
Hello,

I am planning to move to Scotland next April from the south of England in order to study aircraft engineering which is something I've always wanted to do. I will be moving with my partner and our young child. She will be working whilst I study full time. We plan to save up as much as possible between now and then to make the transition easier.

The two year course is not a university degree and as such I do not believe I am eligible for student finance. The tuition fees are £4590 every six months.

I am hoping some of you may be aware of any financial help that I might be eligible for. I have looked at a career development loan but this would only cover one year's fees. I plan on discussing this matter further with the college when I visit but hoped in the meantime to obtain some more information.

Thank you.

What level is the course, what qualification do you get at the end?

And is that qualification one that employers are interested in? I would have expected aircraft engineers to either need a degree or go through an apprenticeship (which is likely to also lead to a degree these days).
  • Thanks for your replies.

The qualification is a "Category B" license which will allow me to work on and maintain aircraft when they come in for routine overhaul/maintenance etc. I am not sure what level this is taught at. I have been made aware that even with a degree you cannot do this sort of work without first having this license.

In order to obtain this the best route is through an approved training provider which reduces the license time to 2 years down from 5.

    Hope this answers everything.
