Switching supplier process?

I rent out a property, and the tenants are leaving in 10'days. I know the switching process takes 3 weeks, so if I apply to switch to my chosen tarrif today, is it possible? Apart from obviously advising my tenants, to ignore coresspondence.
I just don't know if the switch will effect their account, as I suppose they need to switch too, and close the account down at my house, to open up one at their new house??
is it safe to switch now as that address will be mine in ten days and I'll be paying the bills?

  • I am no expert or have any legal knowledge, but I would just speak to the tenants and check that they are happy for me to start the switching process now. If you get along with them then I wouldn't see the issue.
Thought for the day: each generation of mankind tends to hug the illusion of having reached the culmination of human achievement. Yet, as we scoff at our groping ancestors, so our descendants will surely scoff at us.

No you cannot switch the supply in that manner.
On the day the tenants leave then you need to contact their supplier and set up a new account with them giving the supplier your opening readings. Once the supplier sets up your account and sends you a welcome pack/email/letter then, and only then, can you start to switch away to your chosen supplier.

You HOPE your tenants will be leaving in 10 days ;)

Have you ever watched ' Can't pay, we'll take it away!"?

It may be many, many months, court orders and possibily instructing bailiffs before your tenants eventually leave

In that time, you may receive no rent, and if you do what you propose, you will also be liable for the energy they consume.

Ah, the joys of being a landlord :rotfl:

That is not correct, you could contact any supplier and say I want you to take other this site on dd/mm/yyyyy and that is perfectly legal. The issue is getting the supplier to agree a fixed Change of Supply Date.
Given there is only 10 days to go that is too little time for the switch to go through on the day they move out. In this case the best thing to do is contact the existing supplier to takre over the property (Change of Tenant) and at the same time start the CoS to your chosen supplier. You don't need to wait for welcome packs etc.
