Book via Homeaway or Airbnb?

Hi

I am looking to book an apartment in Italy which is available on both Homeaway and Airbnb. Is there any advantage to booking with one or the other? I had heard that Airbnb charges the guest for booking as well as the owner but can't work out if that is already included in the price quoted? Are there any safety features e.g. making sure my money is safe which makes one better than the other? Thanks for any help.

Airbnb have been mega-spammers on this forum and with such preposterous claims that I'd suggest you avoid them on principle - Dunno the other company though.

No idea about Homestay - BUT if you book via Airbnb the owner doesn't get the money until 24 hours AFTER the renter has arrived - so the renter has time to call Airbnb & stop money going out if place does not exist or not as described.

I've used HomeAway. Most property owners are part of the payment protection scheme that means your money is protected against things like listing fraud, phishing, property significantly misrepresented, wrongful denial of entry, or uninhabitable property upon arrival. It also protects any security deposit if it's wrongly withheld and they'll help with re booking if the booking is cancelled by the owner or manager at the last minute.

Thanks for all the replies. I've realised now that the extra payment on Airbnb is actually shown up front and listed as a Service Fee so at least I know how much it's going to be. Looks as though both have protection built in which is reassuring.
  • You also need to be aware they charge a 3% currency fee if your booking is not in your own country.
You were able to pay in the currency of the country you were booking in until 2015 but they have put a block on that (for those thinking of using fee free credit cards)
