Want to change a prepaid meter

I've just moved into a new house with the previous owner leaving prepaid meters.

I decided to change those to normal meters and possibly change providers of gas & elec. (BG & EON)

We had no issues with the electricity meter and EON changed it quite quickly, but with the gas meter, we've ran into some trouble.

Firstly, British Gas required to register the prepaid meter under my name before we can change it. All was fine until British Gas told us that in order to change the meter we have to pass the Credit Score Check done for them by an external company.

It turned out we couldn't pass it and until today we still have to use the prepaid meter.

How can we solve this? Do I move energy provider again?

    This is what I did:
    • use a cashback site and switch both supplies to EDF Pre-Paid tariffs
    • stay with EDF for 28 days then request switch to credit meter (no checks needed)
    • after meters installed and registered, use cashback site to switch to cheapest supplier

Takes about 3 months overall, but the cashback bonuses plus no need for credit checks and/or deposits make it worthwhile.

Check your credit reference files to find out if there is something amiss on them.

If there is, it probably won't be just the gas supplier that you run into issues with if you try to obtain credit. Even if you get a credit meter from EDF, you may have future issues getting another supplier to accept you on that meter if there is something wrong with your credit files.

If something is wrong, you can get it put right. Or if it is correct, but you have a reason why you defaulted, you can ask the CRA to put a note on the matter that explains your side of the story that may assist you in getting credit from some creditors :)

Hello love2comp and glad we were able to change your prepayment meter to a credit one quickly. Although we don't charge to do this, we do carry out an external credit check before agreeing to the switch. This will have come back as okay or we would've been in touch to let you know.

When you arranged for the meter exchange, did you pick a tariff from those available at the time? If you did, this will be the tariff we'll put you on starting from the day the meter was changed. If not, you'll be on our standard Energy Plan. Should this be the case, you could save money by going on to a different tariff with either us or another supplier. Pop your usage in kWh on to one of the independent comparison sites. This will list your options both with us and with the other suppliers.

With the billing, the technician will have sent us the closing readings from the old meter and the opening readings from the new meter. We'll base the billing on these.

Hope this is useful love2comp and that you've settled in to your new home.
