Ipad Locked

My Ipad has recently has an software update resulting in me needing to use my Apple ID to get back into it.
Unfortunately I cannot remember the password.
When I set up my Apple ID, I used my company email address and the company is no longer so I am unable to reset it with an email notification.
The choice of security questions are strange as I would never have chosen them so I am unable to answer these correctly.
The Ipad was a company one bought overseas and so I do not have a proof of purchase that Apple have also requested.
Apple say there is nothing they can do to help me and I really do not want to throw it in the bin as I cannot afford to replace it, on the other hand its also useless as it is.
Any ideas/suggestions of ways to get into the Ipad or how to reset an Apple ID.

Regards

A colleague recently has similar on an old iPhone 4s (yes an old 4s) - an update occurred then phone was asking for apple credentials.

He did not even know the email address that was used as it said something like c***@icloud.com and he didn't remember ever setting one up using @icloud.com

Anyway he had to call Apple a few times, speaking to different people, providing some information and eventually they reset it remotely (or certainly did something that allowed him back in). It was a second hand phone so he had no receipt.

I guess from an Apple perspective, the iPad you have in your possession could be stolen so they have to be satisfied you are the rightful owner. I there are any unusual apps you have downloaded from the App store then that might go some way to helping prove its yours as they can see all that info.

I don't know what questions they asked my colleague but I do know he had to ring a few times and eventually someone believed him.
