Need lots of shrubs - best way to go?

I have a large steep and muddy ridge that is crying out for shrubs to soak up a lot of the downpours we have here in the Lakes. I can't afford the azaleas and the likes that I would love, so can any of you recommend some good plants and evergreens for my cottage border? It is in a sunny area, although it can get very wet in the downpours as it's not very sheltered.

Little maintenance would be good as well as I only get about 15 minutes a day in the garden in nice weather to do any actual work. The rest of the time seems to involve digging footballs out of the neighbours garden from my toddler who could probably play for Chelsea the amount of time he spends on the floor...

Use the plant finder at crocus.co.uk to narrow down plants that could cope with those conditions.

Some suggestion - Hypericum, Cornus (dogwood), Spiraea, Euonymus japonica, Pieris, Prunus (cherry laurel)
  • Thank you for the website suggestion. Exactly what I was after!
