Getting a builder to quote before we've bought the house

Options
Wondering if anyone can help?
We've had the survey and theres a few roof/chimney issues that I'd like a proper quote on before proceeding but the roofer I contacted initially said he'd charge for this as we didn't actually own the house and he probably wouldn't end up doing the work?!? Is this common? Should we be expecting to pay for a quote because we haven't bought the house yet?

We were in the same position, and we had 2 roofers and a gas engineer out and they didn't charge us for a quote. We were up front that we hadn't bought it yet and wanted quotes for issues the building survey had highlighted.
  • Thanks. I wasn't expecting a charge as most offer free quotes but just wanted to check to see if this was the norm before proceeding with contacting other builders!

    Some do, some don't.

Maybe you could come to an arrangement whereby if you do buy, and do use them, they'll knock it off the total.

A lot of people will charge for a quote on a property that hasn't been purchased yet as it's a slim chance if getting a job out of it and it takes time for them to put a quote together.
If you owned the property and there was a good likelihood of their being a job for the builder they might not charge for a quote...

We are in the process of trying to put an offer together on a property, and need to get a roofer out to check things over as there are issues we've seen personally after being allowed to go up the loft to have a look.

We are expecting to pay for the roof to be looked at. It's a lot cheaper than a survey, and you're going to get a proper quote rather than a load of backside covering vagueness ;)
