Obviously, but I have to take into consideration other factors whether I can have or not such insurance.

It's done. British Friendly, covered until the age of 67, benefits paid for 2 years (unlimited claims). It is PHI (confirmed), waiting time 4 weeks (my employer pays 1 month salary) and it is 'Own Occupation'.

Some activities are not covered, and others mainly if it's professional, not amateur. I can still cycle to work or do treadmill.

Current medical conditions are not covered and illnesses I have received treatment once but less than 2 years ago, if longer, they're covered.

Sound good to me, it's better than nothing. If I am sick longer than 2 years then most probably I'm permanently disabled so like many who don't have insurance, I'd be like one of them :)

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

British Friendly have a short-term income protection (1, 2 or 5 years) and a long-term income protection (going upto a maximum of age 70).

With medical conditions, it is something an IFA or whole of market protection adviser may prefer to speak with underwriters to see what they say (Before submitting an application - as that doesnt count as rejection/modified terms to declare). This would see if your conditions are limiting selection/choice.

If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

I have a chronic illness which needs ongoing treatment, meds etc and if I skip meds for one night, next morning I'd be in misery. That's what the advisor said will put off many and British Friendly do not require much info for their 1 or 2 year plan and they do not provide long term cover for my illness.

Probably should have mentioned that in your OP, due to your illness you may not qualify for long term Income protection or it may be financially prohibitive.

  • Thank you all for your help, much appreciated.

    Update:
Back then I joined BFS. Unfortunately, I became ill, diagnosed in plain english with cervical cord cyst. AND, BFS agreed to pay me half of my salary, wonderful.

I'm indebted to you, thank you.

PS: I'm still off sick and I will undergo surgery, hopefully not
  • For what it's worth.
When i claimed against the policy i discovered i was lucky in that i had an xray taken of the complaint almost three years before claiming, but since it was over two years they paid out.
This was not made apparent, in fact there was no mention of pre existing medical issues and i suspect a lot of people are going to be disappointed with their policy. It would be really helpful if companies outlined this at the point of comparison. Sure it's no doubt in the small print and i'm also sure they are well aware that people rarely read the nuts and bolts of any policies. I bought mine from a well known comparison site.

As much as its a pain, I would recommend going to the insurers offering IPI themselves to get the best information, especially Fuse Assurance, how I found out about a few months ago.

They were really helpful, answered all the questions I had and didn't really even push to sell.

Well using the company you named isn't going directly to the insurer offering IPI themselves, it's going to the broker and your post sounds like a typically spam, self-serving ad!
