Need A Car and in a Pickle!

Hi All, Looking for some advice on what may be the best course of action as I need a car later on this year. I have a full license and can drive but have not lived in cities that have necessitated me to get a car. Now I need a car for a wedding in August that I am not missing out on but its in Scotland. I need the car mid August for 6 days.

The cheapest option would be for me to borrow my Dads car and put myself on the insurance, however this is now no longer an option. So I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice on the best car hire services and what to look out for so as to not loose out too much money wise as I am aware they like to add on lots of costs at the counter so the final price online is not the final price. Failing that, any advice on how the best way to go about insuring a vehicle for some one over 25 with a license for a year and no years no claim bonus as I am contemplating taking the plunge but want to ensure I am not just throwing money down the drain.

Bit of a long post but any help very much appreciated!!

I've hired cars in the UK from Enterprise, Practical and smaller local hire companies and none has charged me any different to the online or phone-quoted price. You do need a £200 deposit for some which you get back if no damage.

This is really 2 separate issues, who to hire a car from and how to avoid excessive charges for insurance. The latter is easy, take out your own CDW insurance from the likes of insurance4carhire (other providers are available) and refuse any request from the car hire company to take out theirs. The former is better addressed on the Motoring board.
