Resealing windows with putty or caulk?

Hello I'm looking to place the old putty on my wood windows where it meets the brick as it's dried and cracking.. I assume linseed oil putty is what is on the windows and I was just thinking about replacing it with the same stuff but when looking for the best way to apply it online I have found people using exterior caulk..
I think I probably just want to re apply linseed putty right?
Also roughly how much would you need to do nine windows? I'm thinking I will just get a1kg tub and see how far that goes..

Linseed oil putty is normally used between the wood and the glass. If you're talking about between the wooden frame and the brick, then it's more likely to be exterior caulk.0

Exterior caulk is what you need - readily available from all DIY sheds. If you not digging out the old material, just filling in the gaps then I find finger application works well rather than the gun0

What would have been used before the advent of frame sealant?0
