Caravan touring holiday in france. What insurance

Hi
Im taking my touring caravan down to the south of France this august and wondered what other people who do this do about travel insurance. Now the caravan club do travel insurance specially designed for touring caravan holidays but is rather expensive. I've got European insurance for the car and caravan and euro breakdown insurance for the car with covers the caravan. I dont need baggage or flight cancellation but need health insurance. So Im after peoples thought and ideas.
Thanks Richard W

  • I think you've got it covered.

What does the CC insurance cover that you have already got cover for?
  • yes i think ive got it mostly covered but its cover for illness or accidents ie braking a limb that i want cover for. The caravan club cover motoring and personal but its £182 for 4 people.

I am having my Ford Cmax serviced by a Ford garage as they then give a years breakdown cover that covers Europe and includes a caravan.
Worth looking to see if your car maker does a similar deal.

So you have car and caravan insurance and breakdown insurance? Does yiur breakdown insurance bring your car and caravan back to the UK if your car can't be repaired? For the medical you need standard holiday insurance which will cover your medical bills, accommodation if you're too injured to travel or medical repatriation.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

This is what I get when Ford service my Cmax. Well worth the higher service cost IMO.

    Ford Service Assistance
UK and European Roadside Assistance is offered with Ford Scheduled Service and Ford Motorcraft Service at selected dealers, valid from the date of service for 12 months, or until the next service is due, whichever comes first. If you do break down you’ll get:
Friendly, skilled roadside help in the UK and Europe
Assistance if you break down at home
Alternative transport, replacement vehicle or overnight accommodation if your car can’t be repaired on the spot
    Recovery including caravans and trailers
Ford Roadside Assistance† is available 24 hours a day, all year round with just one phone call.

    How does it work?
If your vehicle breaks down, simply call us and we’ll get someone out to you as fast as we can. If we’re unable to fix the problem there and then, we can help you in other ways such as providing a replacement vehicle, organising costs for alternative travel to your destination or even covering hotel accommodation for you and your passengers. If you break down in Europe and we’re unable to fix your vehicle, we can arrange for it to be sent to one UK address (for example: home, work, or a Ford dealer). Ford Service Assistance is available 24 hours a day, all year round, with just one phone call, wherever you are in Europe.

AS above you only need normal tarvel insiurance. try one of teh comparison sites to find cheapest one that meets your needs.

As far as breakdown cover in EEurope just check it covers what you needs aswell.

The CC cover Red Pennant covers whether the caravan is attached or not and continuation of holidays and translator services to deal direct with garage /breakdown people etc etc. Its is very comprehensive and not just normal breakdown cover.

Other thing to watch is if your breakdown cover (free or not) covers your caravan if over 7m in length

Enjoy - its a great way to holiday
Adac worth a look many use this German company
  • I wonder if anyone else has had this experience?

Our caravan became damaged after a minor accident on the way to the ferry so the very start of our holiday. We managed to nurse it home but could not continue our holiday (all prebooked and paid for), the insurance company assured me that this was a covered event. I hoped we could hire a caravan to go but they would not authorise this before the loss adjuster had come out. This happened 7 days later and 11 days later we still have no authorisation to use the continuance benefit. The reservations we made and paid for are mostly lost now and we were due to return on 2nd September. Obviously our holiday is a total wash as kids back to school on 4th September. The continuance for was either up to £2,000 or 14 days hire. I still have no word that we can use this and our holiday time is almost gone. How can a holiday be continued in such circumstances?

It must have been clear from the outset that the loss adjuster's visit and would not happen in a short time. I would have hired a caravan, if yours was too damaged to be used, to ensure I had a holiday. On your return you can argue about the bill with the insurer.

Or maybe the damage is not great after your minor accident. You could drive it home - what stopped you from continuing on your holiday?

Haven't they made it clear that the caravan wasn't really roadworthy..

The job of any company is to make as much profit as possible which is why you have regulators to try and keep them under control. So they take as much in premiums as possible and pay out as little as possible. You have to read the terms and conditions very carefully. There are so many possible scenarios. Most of the cheap policies cover towing as long as the caravan is roadworthy. Only the caravan type ones cover caravan problems but caravan problems should be rare if you have three newish tyres with you. ADAC always seemed reasonable for the price. Not sure if now taking new members from UK. Red Pennant probably the best but ridiculously expensive. The Caravan Club makes a lot of money from insurance. Red Pennant reviews are generally good but still have a few unhappy customers. Some customers make unreasonable demands eg my brake pad warning light was on and they refused to recover my car from Lyon to Scotland. As regards health insurance we have always relied on the EHIC card in France. I think I have only used it once when I had severe belly ache. I think I had to pay about £30 for the consultation. He gave me a prescription for a load of vitamins which I ignored. You can claim the fee back when you get home
