i understand what your saying about pen and paper, but ease of use, and calculations done for me and thus time saving is key!

also i imagine some of the apps, can make charts over time so i can see "oh look i've spent £123 on X Y or Z".

ill check out some of the suggestions, thanks!

if you want those sort of tools MSMoney is the way to go.

You start with a a plan.

Then you track you are spending to plan

if not you adjust the plan.

I would also recommend YNAB. I have used the desktop only version and have now moved to the new online version. It is worth the subscription.

Their approach takes a bit of time to get used to, but I think it is worth the effort. It has helped me get much more organised and save much more that I was.

Clearcheckbook! There's an online version and an app version. I've used the paid version and the free version, and the free version is more than sufficient for my needs. It has budgeting, envelopes, income/expenditure summaries and projections, as well as a bunch of other stuff I don't use.

I have just discovered this today as my daughter uses it and recommended it. It looks great and having the mobile app means I can record spends on the move.

I use the MoneyWise app on my android phone. It's really simple to use and I just record everything I spend on it. You can filter and see graphs over month or year of your soending and it will export data to spreadsheets too. You can set budgets for spending but the free version only allows up to 4 budgets which I found a bit limiting.

I have been tracking my spending since January on this app and it's been quite an eye opener to find out how much I spend on coffee and small eating out treats for example.

I had previously used paper and pen method but gave up after a few weeks. I think seeing the graphs and trends and being able to easily see trends encourages me to keep recording.
