Why would I, a simple bank customer, have any idea of how the DD system works in the background? Like me, I suspect 99% of MSE users have never heard of AUDDIS and have no reason to know of it and like me I suspect 99% would be shocked to hear that DDs can be set up with no checks by the bank. It makes you wonder why they bother asking for the Account Name on the DD in the first place.PeacefulWaters wrote: »Yes. Unauthorised transactions are covered by legislation. Direct debit refunds are merely an industry standard.
Thanks, that's the distinction I was looking for.Every generation blames the one before...

Because there was a rather famous case a few years ago whereby Jeremy clarkson published his bank account details after stating that no one could do anything with his sort code and account number.
Someone then used those details to set up a direct debit to green peace.
It was a stupid thing to do but proved a point, and clarkson appears to then have checked his bank statements, which you failed to do.0 -
no one could do anything with his sort code and account number.
The fundamental difference being that the fraudsters would also know that the bank account name was almost certainly "Jeremy Clarkson."
The key point in my situation is that the DDs were not set up with my name; the average man in the street knows when they fill in a DD instruction they have to enter the account name and the average man in the street would expect the bank to check this before making any payments.Every generation blames the one before...

No, names aren't connected though there are suggestions they may change this.
It's made fairly well known as to why it's so important to check the sort code and account number when making any form of payment.0 -

No, because you didn't check your bank account for months, or was it years, picking this up early would have led to a a simple remedy.
If you're not using the account then close it down.0
