Switching & meter readings farce
I recently switched from Co-op Energy to So Energy and submitted final/opening reads to both.
First I was informed of an estimated and huge gas meter reading by So, despite giving them an opening reading. Enquiries revealed that 'industry' (?) had given them that number and I had to take photos of my meter to prove the reading I claimed-it turned out 'industry' did not have records of my gas meter being changed in 2015, hence the enormous reading.Co-op energy seemed to know the correct readings as they had been putting them on my bills and charging me accordingly,
Anyway, I thought the glitches were over, but then was informed by So of my opening reading for electricity, once again estimated despite having been given the exact opening read by me and once again, higher than it should have been (though this time only a hundred or units over). Again I queried this and was told that this is what they'd been given by 'industry' and anyway, wouldn't contest it as it was within an acceptable difference range of 250 units.(Acceptable to who?) Eventually they said I'd have to raise the matter with my previous supplier, Co-op, but it was unlikely they'd help and they were right!
I found out Co-op had messed up the electricity figures, again despite being given and seemingly accepted my accurate readings (I won't go into the whole story), but after a nice phone conversation and a follow-up email with my evidence of correct numbers, they have not replied. Suits them more to up my final reading and refund me less, I guess!!
I have now learnt- take photos of all readings. But it's all a bit nonsensical- why ask for final/ opening reads when they may or may not take any notice??

Because many people 'fudge' their meter readings to their advantage. i.e. when moving to a cheaper tariff they give a lower figure, and vice versa when moving to a more expensive tariff.
Posters on MSE have often openly advocated that people should adopt that practice.0
