For those running Android less than 5.0 on your Kodi box, you must update as there is a serious security flaw. The latest Kodi cant be installed on versions less than 5.0 also.
I actually got a letter from Virgin - they suspect one device on our network may have randsomeware on it. I turned on my Kodi box and the message came up about updating for security. After scanning all devices it must be the Kodi box as its too much of a coincidence.
I have binned the old box and ordering a new one, as its old and its time for a better spec.
Dont get caught out!

If you have an old android box and kodi v17.2 wont install, try SPMC - it is an updated patched (to make addones work - unsure of security) version of v16.
I'm unsure of Zola's security flaw, but Kodi's one I know of involed malformed subtitles. v17.2 fixes this0 -
I have an old andriod box (probably less than 5) with Kodi installed and connected to the tv. I don't use it for anything else just Kodi.
Is it safe? it doesn't matter if the box gets a virus as I don't use it for anything apart from kodi. or could that virus get from that into my other devices which it could effect and gain info from (laptop/phones etc) via my broadband somehow?
Please excuse the what will be to most a stupid question but I have no clue how these virus etc work.
Thanks0 -
I thought v17.2 had problems of it's own. One needs v17.30

ThanksTo be clear this possible vunrability(sic) is only present when you first enable a subtitle dowload(sic) add-on and then actually download zipped subtitles. Any subtitles that you already have as text file, are embedded in the video stream or are included with you DVD or Blurays are safe.

Ta, I only got 17.2 about 1.5 hours after it was released yesterday.
The subtitle issue may affect other players like vlc etc too, and it is about subtiles you download and are compromised. No one, except developers and people in the know will know at this moment how dangerous it is - the show is not over, fat lady has to sing first0 -

How long is a piece of string?
I have no knowledge of this particular problem however unless your router is set up to prevent access between devices, and the default for most is to allow access between network devices without even an alternative option then if any device becomes infected by malware there is a chance that that malware may be able to infect other devices on that network. It all depends on just what the malware may be and what vulnerabilities exist on your other devices.
The other possibility is that the malware will turn you into a massive spam source or infect other equipment not belonging to you. An ISP may pick up this sort of activity and may disconnect you until the issue is fixed.
None of that is necessarily going to happen though and the problem could just be the one device.0 -

There's something quite satisfying about seeing thieves becoming victims...
Well with 10 year sentences for piracy and only 1 in 4 crimes being solved in London, plus the average one punch killer gets less than a 4 year sentence, Trambor you might be lucky and find the prisons filled up with TV watchers, file sharing grannies, and other easy pickings, while the organised and lucky 75% roam free. I hope they are your neighbours rather than mine, as I prefer the tv watchers and grannies
