Shared water mains - nothing on deeds/searches

We bought an end of terrace victorian house back in January which we have been renovating since.
After we got the keys we found out from one of the mid terrace neighbours that the water supply is shared between 4 of the houses and that they want to replace it as it is very old and we all need to contribute.
Annoying to be hit with an unexpected bill just as soon as you get the keys, but if it needs doing it needs doing.
However, there is nothing on the deeds, nothing in the searches to say that our water supply is shared.
Is this normal?
