Can I varnish metal?

We've bought a cast metal bistro set from amazon for the garden, its painted black to look old, but was fairly cheap and I'm a bit concerned about it rusting within the next few months. Is there any type of paint on varnish or laquer (spelling?) for painted metal that we could give the set a coat of please?

Well it's aluminium so it isn't going to rust.


Personally I would see how it looks without treating it because I think anything you do is likely to make it worse not better

won't rust in the traditional sense.

Hammerite is a well-known brand for metal paint. I've used it before on a rusty gate and it was very good.

Not sure if you'll need it on aluminium, but if you feel you want to paint your bistro set you could consider Hammerite.

Hammerite is a great product in the right setting. I have used it for years.


But I seriously doubt you would get an acceptable result with it on something with as tight and complex a shape as the OP's table and chairs.
