Somehow, dirt has got inside the two layers of polycarbonate. I just had a workman take a look and he says he has heard of the existence of extremely long thin brushes which one can slide in and clean the whole 6 foot length. However, he has no idea where he heard this from, thinks he may have dreamed it, and I cannot find anything on MSE.
I found what is perhaps a suitable brush on the net (up to 60") but this is in the USA.
