I'd suggest you get as large a pot or pots as you can. Personally, I think those zinc dustbins look nice, just depends on taste.

Also, whatever you get, check whether it's shallow rooted or not as those plants may suffer more in severe heat.

Might a vertical garden work? https://greenerideal.com/lifestyle/diy-gardening-how-to-create-a-vertical-wall-garden/

Thanks Chris25. I do like the look of zinc planters and I did buy some metal plant pots last year (courtesy of £shop again) but the trouble is they heat up too much so even very hardy plants needed constant watering. I have just put up the latest £ bargains and they look quite nice - cream wire bird-cage type things. One with a holder for a plant (probably just get some trailing ivy) and one with a tea-light holder so nice for the evenings. Then the drill battery died and I can't charge it until someone visits as my hands will not do the "squeeze both sides and twist" action to remove the battery. Eldest (who lives here) is away for a couple of weeks. I even had to change the bleach I buy as I can't open some of the bottles.
At the back of the garden I have 3 stipa gigantea in pots which have lovely seed heads on so may put them in place to screen neighbour's garage a bit. I was also wondering if those tall, slim conifers would work in pots as they would tie in with the Mediterranean theme. I have even thought about fake (or faux to be posh) ones. So - probably abandoning the idea of climbing plants and looking at other tall stuff. Have to check the budget and keep an eye out for cheap planters. Definitely going to try a fig though as the grape won't play ball.
