Credit Card Companies can't identify me

Hi All,
I've recently sent my 1st PPI letters to MBNA and Capital one. The accounts were closed >7 years ago and I do not have my account numbers. I wrote, using the MSE PPI template, requesting information but both lenders are stating that that they can't identify me. I provided my full name, DOB and previous address where the cards are registered. Capital One are also stating that my details may have been deleted due to their data retention policy.
Am I being fobbed off here? Has anyone else hit similar issues, if so could they please advise the next steps may be?
Thanks in advance,
Andrew

There's no fobbage going on.
You could gamble £10 on a SAR if you're feeling lucky.0 -
Data protection act requires the destruction of unnecessary data after a sufficient period. The FCA suggest 6 years after closure for most things.
If it was 7 years ago, I would expect them to still have a fair amount of detail. Enough to be able to handle a PPI complaint. If it's a lot greater than 7 years then you would expect the amount of data to reduce significantly.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Thanks zx81 & dunstonh for the advice. I'll try again with MBNA & Capital One & see where it gets me. I don't actually know if i was miss sold PPI but thought I should check :-)0

No point "trying again". You need to send an official Subject Access Request (SAR) letter, which for £10 requires the Bank to send you all detail it has on file for you. If the SAR returns nothing, you know the Bank genuinely has no record of you. If the SAR returns no record of PPI you didn't have it.I'll try again with MBNA & Capital One & see where it gets me.
Are you sure you want to spend £10 on this? It'll be £20 for both.0
