Failed Switch - MPRN not in database

Hi all. What is the process for getting the MPRN correctly in the national database? I was just on the phone with British gas for 40 minutes, (most of it on hold) trying to get answers. Makes no sense to me, I switched using a comparison site well over a year ago so god knows why my MPRN isn't registered now.

The below is the email received after the switch failed:

"We've received an update that your recent switch application to ScottishPower hasn't been successful because the MPRN (your 6-10 digit gas supply number, sometimes referred to as your M number) provided from your gas supply is not in the national database.

It looks like the details on your application form were incorrect. OR it might be that you provided the correct details, but your supply isn’t correctly registered in the national database (something which your current supplier is responsible for keeping up to date). You should be able to find your MPRN on your most recent bill, but if not, you can contact your current supplier which’ll confirm it for you. "

  • Two possible solutions:

    1. Can your supplier find your details using your Post Code, House or Flat number and quote the MPRN and try that or

    2. If you MPRN number is less than 10 digits have you put 0 at the front for each "missing" digit. Say its 123456789 you need to input it as 0123456789?

    1. Check your original application to ensure you used the correct MPRN. It should be the one that is on the latest gas bill/statement you received from your current supplier.
Ensure you did not use the Meter Serial Number by mistake

If this is all correct, then

    2. Contact your current supplier to advise the alleged error in the database.
