Missed card payment due to fathers death

Options
Hi guys. My father passed away on the 5th April and in all the running around and attempting to sort out his affairs I inadvertently didn't pay that month's credit card installment. When I realised the following day I made the payment. Do I have grounds to ask the credit card company to refrain from putting that black mark on my credit record?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Thank you

You can ask. They don't have to but often will if it is the first time it has happened.

Set up a direct debit when you speak to them.

    As above, ask them nicely.

You really should have set up a dd when you got the card.
Set one up at the same time to avoid this happening again

Sorry to hear about your father. If you ask they're very likely to waive the fee (£12, I assume?) but removing the credit score would actually be distorting the truth so they probably won't do that as the industry requires accurate reporting of credit history in order to function and it's very important for our whole system to report things as they happen - understandable extenuating circumstances or not. Worth a try, though!

One day late? They might not even have reported it negatively.

I agree here. I didn't think it was reported to the CRAs unless it hadn't been paid by the time the next statement is produced - so about 5 days.

The OP "should" have paid on time. There is no "should" about DDs. It is one way of paying and has its pitfalls like any other method.

    Agree.

The CCs generally report the status of the account monthly. So you're unlucky if you're reported for being one day late.

That said, and whatever the phone operator says, CCs aren't too brilliant at removing a "black mark". Some would argue that they shouldn't anyway, if indeed the payment is late - because then the record becomes inaccurate. There is a mechanism for you to "add a note" to the system, but frankly a single missed payment has very little effect, especially after 6 months.

CCs will generally remove charges in situations such as this, especially if it is the first time.

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your replies. The CC is Virgin and they added their charge immediately. As soon as I realised I set the DD up so it shouldn't happen again.

Hopefully you did this before the next statement was produced? Either way, and as I'm sure they've already told you, pay close attention to the next statement...if it doesn't carry the message "your direct debit payment will be taken from your nominated account on xx/xx/xx" then be sure to pay by other means until such message does appear.
