New staircase cost?

We have an open staircase in our lounge, wanting to replace it, it will be in the same place, nothing fancy, just spindles, and enclosed treads.

Any ideas of costs? Supply and fit, up north

Folks need more detail before commenting. But here are some thoughts. Is it open plan and a feature timber staircase? If so you may want a carpenter to fix risers to it. You would have to discuss how this is done. If it will all be carpeted then timber and workmanship will be covered - so you may lower your standards/requirements. Spindles are available off the shelf but it depends what timber and what pattern you want.Plus what decoration - varnish. stain or paint.

From a technical and money saving approach you want to avoid renewing the staircase - come up with ideas to improve what you have.

I have had 2 carpenters out, both said better to remove and replace as staircase has been added to/altered over the last 40 years. Chased them both up, 1 said he was too busy, the other never got back to me! Neither gave me a price.

It will be carpeted and painted, so cheap and chearful nothing fancy

Replacing stairs is a significant amount of work. They are fixed into your upstairs floor joists - so disruption to your floor. The easy option is to repair and if this looks poor because of alterations over the years then fix a soffit board to the underside - be it plasterboard, plywood or whatever.

Did your carpenters say replace the stairs because this is a lot more lucrative, more work, and with the profit to be made on supplying the materials? Here there is more profit to be made on a stairs than on a sheet of plywood.
