If you are on notice, start handover and winding down.

Eg. Any tasks you like password resets ask what will be the procedure when you are gone...

I'm always busy doing something - its a large school with 300+ devices, plus smartboards and projectors, network, both hard and wireless and 500+ useres. Apart from the server, I do all hardware, software, administration and licencing, ad-hock training for both staff and students, and run an hour long computer club over lunch. And, I can guarantee that at least 3 people per day either forget a password to something, or get locked out of their account. I'd like to see them do that in 10 hours a month.
But they have been whilst you've been ill surely?

I taught for five years and only one of those schools had a dedicated IT tech support staff. He worked across three sites (not one)

Every other school Ive worked in the office staff had admin rights over passwords etc, and we just fixed our computers for the most part ourselves.

I can't comment on fairness or discrimination, but it's likely that you are costing the school considerably more than £9k per year once pension contributions, sick pay and other costs associated with permanent employees are taken into account.

This might be a good time to do some studying to update your technical skills, maybe get a certification or two. Is the contractor employed by a company themselves, and do they or similar companies have vacancies? Your experience of working in schools (and I guess completed background checks) might be in demand elsewhere.
  • Not either, they are just saving money.
  • Thanks for all the responses. Looks like its just paranoia and me being bitter. I wasn't looking forward to the hell that comes with September anyway, so guess I'm just out. Next!!!
