Renting a flat - agency contract

Options
Hello all,

First time posting here.

I am currently living in a flat, but I'm not on the contract. The reason for this, is when I was looking for a flat last year, I was still a student and had no income - my application was rejected but due to me having no other real options, and the other two tenants wanting me to live with them, we went on and I moved in anyway. I didn't pay the agency fees, but paid the deposit and I'm paying my monthly rent to one of the tenant who then transfer the overall rent to the agency. This has never been an issue in our side, we have always paid the rent in time.

Now I have a full-time job, and I would like to be on the contract. I got in touch with the agency, and they're asking for my current address. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be happy to know I've been living here.

In the email the agency says " could you give us your current address for our records". If I give my previous address (when I was a student), will they check with my former agency to see if I'm still living there? Do I give the address of a friend? What do I do?

Further, will this impact my credit rating should I be looking to secure a mortgage in the future?

Any help appreciated.

They might check with the previous landlord/letting agency. Is it just the address they are asking for or a reference as well?

A letting agency referencing you will not be recorded anywhere on your credit files.

It does seem that it would have been best to leave well alone and continue as an excluded occupier in the property.
  • The email just said "In the meantime if you could provide your contact mobile number and current UK address for our records." - I don't really know what to think of it. If I give another address and they find out that I'm not living there, what can happen? Will my current flatmates be in trouble?

Thank you for your advice on the rest.
